Passport : A Must Document of Today
I always receive
calls from near and dears about assistance in getting passports. To get
passport in hand after attending appointment and submitting all required
documents needs few days to get it delivered at home address. Hence plan the
passport applications in advance and keep checking the expiry of passports
frequently. Below are the few points which I would like to share:
Passport:
Passport is the
most important document while traveling abroad. Its an official request from
one government to another to treat the tourists as per the international
treaties.
In old days the
kings / states used to give letters ( DastaK) with stamps and seal to other kings or for check post
officers requesting about safe passage to their citizens / traders traveling from
one place to other for pilgrimage/ trading or for other reasons.
Passport is must
for Indian citizens if they want to visit any of the countries in the world (
Apart from Nepal and Bhutan) . Many of
the countries provide visa to permit entry and few countries approve visa on
arrival ( i.e Thailand, Srilanka ) or just entry and exit stamps ( Maldives, Mauritius)
Documents required for new Passport:
Now a days getting
passport is very easy. Aadhar card, new
and one year old electricity / BSNL telephone bill, living or transfer certificate
, education qualification proofs and birth certificate ( for people who have
birth date on or after 1st January after 1989) are the basic
required documents. For emergency passport application, verification certificate is required to get passport with in 07 days.
By general process one can get passport in hand with in 15 to 30 days
after successful appointment and depending upon pre/ post police verification. Documents
might change case to case basis.
ECR: Emigration Check Required:
In case of no or
low education and/ or no submission of
education proofs, the stamp of ECR comes on the passport. This stamp attracts more inquiries by Indian emigration
officers on airport about the linkage between travel plans/ work permits/ work
visa acquired by the traveler and the reality. This rule is helpful in case of traveler
with low education has received fraud employment offers and might get helped by
the officers to prevent future issues.
How to keep passport:
Always keep
passport in lockers or in a safe where it can’t get damaged due to water or
other natural elements. Also keep it out
of reach of children. The damage to the
passport , passport with loose , tore off pages is not considered valid for
travel. Getting new passport in case of
loss of passport is also an tedious task and attracts police complaint and
completion of documentation from passport office.
If you loose passport
or if it gets stolen while your are traveling abroad, get in touch with nearest Indian embassy/
consulate and ask for the new passport after paying fees ( time taken and
documents required like FIR in local police station etc. depends upon case to
case basis). But you must have copy of
passport and copy of visa to get it in hand. Hence always keep photocopy of
passport and visa along with you when you are on tour and one soft copy attached
to your email.
Change in Name, address etc:
For married
ladies or in case of gents if they want change in name, then valid documents are required ( For ladies if
they want to change the name after marriage, need marriage certificate , the passport
officer can ask for affidavit as per case) for gents if there is change in name
the affidavit, paper news or name change published in gazette is required and
depends upon case to case basis. With new
address proofs one can change the address also. One must provide address where he/ she is
staying. Giving wrong address / date of birth or any other information might
attract penalties from Passport authorities.
Validity of passport:
Passports are
valid for 10 years in case of adults and for children below 18 years its valid
for 05 years only. Although if the child
is 16 years then parents can ask for 10 years passport with extra amount
paid. Please note that passports of
parents are required to get passport for minor children. Also note that the passport must be valid for at least 6 months or 3 months ( depending upon country visiting) on the return journey date. Out of validity or expired passports are useless to travel. Hence keep checking validity of passports specially in case of children. Also at least 2 pages must be blank for visa and stamping purpose.
Passports are of
36 and 60 pages and one can request for 60 page passport if he/ she is a
regular traveler.
